IVDD, or Intervertebral Disc Disease, is a condition that affects the spinal discs, often causing pain and mobility issues.  Milo arrived with weak front limbs and struggled to stand on his hind legs due to the pressure on his spinal cord. It was a difficult time for Milo and his family. Through regular sessions of underwater treadmill hydrotherapy, Milo began to see remarkable progress. Hi I’m Alli, let me introduce you to Harley (my special boy) who just celebrated his 1st birthday. Harley came into my life about 5 months after I lost my beautiful girl Storm (German Shepherd) to bloat. At the time I said I was going to wait a good while before I took on another puppy (mostly because my heart was broken). One day at work one of our regular clients came in and asked if anyone wanted a German Shepherd puppy as a friend of his had purchased one and it was not a good fit for them at home. As soon as I saw his little picture I was hooked, just had to convince my hubby (wasn’t too hard😊). Harley had been through a few sets of hands before he came to us as the previous owners had tried their best to find him his forever home, however, unfortunately he wasn’t a good fit. So, when I got him, he was a little nervous of car rides as he thought he was not going to come home again. Now he hops into the car, ready for his next adventures. When Harley was dropped off to us his previous owners handed him over saying that they had named him Storm, and this brought tears to my eyes as that was the name of my beautiful girl that I had lost. Obviously, we had to rename him and he has been living his best life ever since. He graduated from puppy school with the Illawarra Dog Training Club and continued his training with South Coast Dog Training in Albion Park, he’s learnt to swim @waterwalkies and is living his best life. 🩵A friend sent me this quote when I suddenly lost my ‘heart boy’ TJ to bloat 4 months ago. I loved it, I cried, I read it to clients and they cried because it was beautiful. 😭 This week I have shared my girl Ava’s story about how laser therapy has helped her. It did, it massively improved her mobility and comfort for the past month. What I didn’t mention in my post was that we knew that Ava was palliative care, 12 is a good age for a Great Dane. Sadly, Thursday night she went downhill quickly. Thankfully the team at @restyourpawsau were able to visit our home and lay our old girl to rest peacefully. A few clients have used them lately and rated them highly, I know why. 🙏 Rest Your Paws specialise in palliative care and at home euthanasia. The vet that attended Nikki who also works at Warilla @greencross.warilla was absolutely amazing. We hate the thought of losing our beloved companions, but sadly it does happen. The empathy and respect that was shown was absolutely amazing. Most importantly, our girl was not stressed in a clinic environment. We hate to think about losing our loved ones, but utterly unfairly, they do not live as long as we would like.  I can not recommend them enough. We already had our new boy coming next week to hopefully bring Ava some joy. Unfortunately, she will never get to meet him. 😥 When we lose a companion, the instant response sometimes is to say “never again.” Every puppy and dog deserve love, they will never replace the souls that we lost but they are the next generation that need loves too. 🐾 The power of Laser Therapy 💥 🐶💕 We often say to clients that we ride the emotional roller coaster along with them. We have the privilege of doing what we love. Sometimes, we work with the senior companions, and we are sad when we see one cross over. We lose the dog and often the friendship of the owner… until the next puppy arrives. So while everyone loves a puppy, the oldies pull on our heartstrings just a little bit tighter. This one is particularly close to home as this one is my girl (Cath). At 12 years of age, Ava has been struggling with arthritis and recently acquired a back injury, making it tough for her to enjoy her golden years to the fullest. Losing her brother last year unexpectedly has also left her very down. While a new companion will help the sadness (watch for updates) Her pain levels needed addressing right away. Post injury, she started on some pretty heavy medication and crate rest. She was miserable and drowsy. But thanks to the laser therapy, her days are a bit easier! ✨ Since starting laser therapy sessions, Ava has experienced a remarkable reduction in pain and a significant improvement in mobility. 🙌 It's been heartwarming to see her moving around with greater ease and comfort, reclaiming her zest for life! Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common condition in dogs, particularly in certain breeds such as Dachshunds, French Bulldogs and Beagles but may occur in any breed. It occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the spine become damaged or herniated. This can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, weakness, and paralysis. Symptoms of IVDD can include sudden onset of pain, reluctance to move or walk, difficulty getting up or climbing stairs, and loss of bladder or bowel control. In severe cases, the dog may be unable to move its hind legs. IVDD is often treated with rest and confinement to prevent further damage to the spine. Pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to manage pain. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove the herniated disc and relieve pressure on the spinal cord. Rehabilitation including hydrotherapy may also be recommended to help regain strength and mobility. Preventing IVDD in dogs include maintaining a healthy weight, proper exercise, and avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the spine such as jumping and stairs. It's important to consult with a veterinarian if you suspect your dog may have IVDD, as early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of recovery. We have successfully treated many dogs with IVDD in our underwater treadmill. We are able to use the bouancy of the water to support and strengthen muscles and importantly in cases of IVDD, teach gait re-education. The heated water also assists with pain relief and a reduction of swelling. It has been a wonderful resource where we have learned some invaluable information. “Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. It affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old, nd potentially up to 35% of dogs of all ages. It is considered a welfare concern in companion animals such as dogs, especially if left untreated. And it is not just for senior dogs, a recent pivotal work from NC State University has put the spotlight on arthritis being a young dog disease. 40% of 123 “clinically healthy” dogs between 8 months and 4 years old were found to have radiographic evidence of arthritis in at least one joint, and 24% of them had pain associated with the arthritic joint. Of equal concern was that in 57% of the dogs with pain related to an arthritic joint, the owner was aware something was not right, but only 13% of these dogs were receiving any form of pain and arthritis management.”-( https://caninearthritis.co.uk/ ) Our program will include information like - How do I know if my dog has arthritis? 🤔 What is IVDD in dogs? Read on…. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common condition in dogs, particularly in certain breeds such as Dachshunds, French Bulldogs and Beagles but may occur in any breed. It occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the spine become damaged or herniated. This can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, weakness, and paralysis. Symptoms of IVDD can include sudden onset of pain, reluctance to move or walk, difficulty getting up or climbing stairs, and loss of bladder or bowel control. In severe cases, the dog may be unable to move its hind legs. IVDD is often treated with rest and confinement to prevent further damage to the spine. Pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to manage pain. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove the herniated disc and relieve pressure on the spinal cord. Rehabilitation including hydrotherapy may also be recommended to help regain strength and mobility. Preventing IVDD in dogs include maintaining a healthy weight, proper exercise, and avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the spine such as jumping and stairs. It's important to consult with a veterinarian if you suspect your dog may have IVDD, as early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of recovery. We have successfully treated many dogs with IVDD in our underwater treadmill. We are able to use the bouancy of the water to support and strengthen muscles and importantly in cases off IVDD, teach gait re-education. The heated water also assists with pain relief and a reduction of swelling. Dog don’t have to be old to have arthritis.😳 Osteoarthritis (OA) stands out as the predominant source of persistent discomfort in canines. It impacts approximately 80% of dogs aged 8 and older, and potentially up to 35% across all age groups. Particularly concerning in companion animals like dogs, untreated OA poses a significant welfare risk. While arthritis is commonly associated with aging, it can afflict dogs of any age due to developmental joint disease, a primary cause of arthritis in younger dogs. This condition results in poorly fitting joints and early onset degenerative changes, progressing to arthritis and causing pain, immobility, and visibly abnormal joints. Though arthritis is often simplistically defined as "inflammation of the joints," its complexity extends beyond this notion. It is not solely a cartilage-related ailment; instead, it affects all components within the joint. If left unaddressed, arthritis can lead to complete joint failure. During the degenerative process of arthritis, cartilage within the joint deteriorates without replacement. The inner lining of the joint capsule becomes inflamed, and the outer fibrous layer thickens and restricts movement. The normally nutritious joint fluid loses its viscosity, offering diminished support for normal joint motion. New bone formation occurs around the joint margins, and the underlying bone remodels, losing its ability to absorb shock forces. Ligaments, both local and distant to the joint, weaken, leaving the joint unstable.  🐕Throughout this degeneration, nerve receptors within the bone and joint capsule relay messages of inflammation and tissue damage to the brain. Heat stress is a serious concern that demands our attention. 🌞 🔥 Recognise the Signs: Watch for excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, and rapid pulse. These are red flags indicating your dog may be struggling with the heat 🚿 Stay Hydrated: Ensure your canine companion has constant access to fresh water. Hydration is key to regulating body temperature. 🏠 Create a Cool Haven: Are they able to be inside with air conditioning? Provide shaded areas for your dog to retreat from the sun. Consider using cooling mats or setting up a kiddie pool for them to cool off. Provide frozen treats. Bring them for a swim! 🚶‍♂️ Time Your Walks: Exercise in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid hot pavement, which can burn sensitive paw pads. If the pavement is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it is too hot for them. Test with the back of your hand and hold it for at least 10 seconds. 🚗 Do not leave them unattended in a car: According to CarsGuide, the ambient temperature inside a sealed car on a sunny 20-degree Celsius day can double in less than ten minutes, and rise to as much as 60 degrees C within 30 minutes. Many members of these clubs bring their own dogs to Water Walkies. In all industries their can be rivalries or just difference of opinions in how things are done. As the saying goes, we like to consider ourselves Switzerland. 🇨🇭 We thoroughly believe that all dogs should be able to have access to our centre. Some of the owners who use these different businesses can be time poor. Our Saturday spots are often booked out weeks in advance, and they are unable to bring their companion for hydrotherapy on weekdays. Because of this reason some of these businesses have started offering an add-on service to their clients where they bring their doggos to us for their hydrotherapy sessions at their clients request. The sessions are mostly Learn to Swim, Confidence Building and Fun and Fitness sessions 🐕 Recently, we have received a bit of feedback, so we thought we needed to set the record straight. When the dogs walk through the door at Water Walkies, they come under our control just like any other client. Some people have strong opinions of different training techniques or different sports that people involve their dogs in. Our qualified hydrotherapists perform all of the sessions utilising our established positive reinforcement philosophy. We will not exclude any dog from receiving beneficial hydrotherapy sessions. The cranial cruciate in dogs is equivalent to the human ACL. In most dogs, the cruciate ruptures due to gradual weakening of the ligament fibres over time. The exact cause isn't known, but genetics likely play a major role. Other factors like obesity, body structure, hormones, and joint inflammation might also contribute. Limping is the primary indication of cruciate injury. It can manifest abruptly post-exercise in certain dogs, while others experience gradual and sporadic development. Some dogs face issues in both knees, struggling to stand and walking unsteadily. Proper post-surgery care is essential to avoid complications. Premature or excessive activities risk damaging surgical repairs, potentially leading to problems like fractures or implant failure, requiring further surgeries. Your dog's surgeon will explain postoperative care thoroughly. Research highlights that physical rehabilitation significantly speeds up a dog's recovery and improves outcomes, regardless of the surgical method.
